Malaria Prevention and Control: Trying the Environmental Sanitation Approach

Image
Malaria Prevention and Control: Trying the Environmental Sanitation Approach It is no longer news that Malaria fever is endemic to Nigeria and the entire Sub-saharan Africa and unfortunately it has become a norm in our collective lexicon in this part of the world. Also, many a family already have a budget for the combat of the accepted disease (Malaria tax) that it is no longer shocking, the number of deaths attributed to it on a daily basis. In retrospect, looking at the efforts both the Federal and State governments put into the fight against the Ebola virus scourge that  ravaged parts of the West Africa including Nigeria, even though recorded deaths were low compared to thousands of children under five years and pregnant women dying daily via malaria, so many questions begin to pop up. Do we act so non-challantly because Malaria kills majorly the poor members of the public or what? It is really disturbing. Really, it's not because the government has not done anything b

Today is World Water Day!

Today is World Water Day! Femi Abolade |  March 22, 2017  | 9.30am After air, the most important need of man is water. The popular singer and Afrobeat legend, Abami eda Fela Anikulapo Kuti sang the song water no get enemy. And the axiom is actually true. But unfortunately, there are several parts of the world with no access to potable water. We must therefore do everything in our power to protect our water sources. World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about taking action to tackle the water crisis. Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home, spending countless hours queuing or trekking to distant sources, and coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water. This year's theme: Why waste water? in support of SDG 6.3 on improving water quality and reducing, treating and reusing wastewater. As Environmental health practitioners, we should encourage the populace to conserve and preserve water. Prea

An Open Letter to the Council of Provosts of Colleges of Health

Image
An Open Letter to the Council of Provosts of Colleges of Health Sirs, WATCH YOUR BACKS: BACKLASH IS IMMINENT It is my hope that this letter to you our revered leaders at the various Schools and Colleges of Health Tec hnology across the country will not be misconstrued as an affront on your personalities but an effort to ensure that holistic health is preserved. As a graduate of one of the foremost school of Health Technology in Nigeria about 14 years ago, I have come to a conclusion that most of us are actually overrated. The Health sector in the Nation is in a sorry state, not only because of the policy makers whose myopic views keep hampering development but also because our training institutions which are supposed to produce policy implementors have done more harm than good. In the past years all we have are government health institutions where few health workers are trained but today, private health institutions are springing up daily like unwanted boils. Have these p

Ado-Odo/Ota local government: Sanitation officers act with impunity By Gbenga Akinfenwa   |   19 March 2017   |   1:23 am Council’s toilet too far from citizens Operates Private Cell The excesses of sanitation officers of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government in Ogun State now constitute embarrassment to residents and other road users in the area.In the last few weeks, there are reports of innocent citizens arrested and locked-up overnight at designated cell within the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Headquarters. Majority of those detained in this cell were arrested at odd hours of the night and for minor offences such as urinating in open space or around bus stops. The Guardian learnt that these security operatives come in plain clothes, accompanied by Naval personnel to harass and arrest their victims, who are workers and traders returning to their homes after the day’s work. It was also gathered that they hang around road junctions and bus stops, where there are no public toil

Are you still looking for a job?

Image
Are you still looking for a job? Well, you are not alone. So many people are also inthe same boat as you.But have you ever considered that you could actually be the cause why you havekept on searching with nothing meaningful in sight?Well, here, let's take a look. These are some of the reasons why your job searchhas proven to be abortive so far. 1. You don’t know what a job really is: As funny as this might sound, so many folks out there who deem themselves unemployed actually don’t know what a job is really all about. You might be one of them. Generally speaking, so many people thinka job is all about having an office and probably, a boss too.To them a job is simply a place where you dress up and go to every day of the week, spend some time there, perform certain tasks and get paid at the end of the week or month as the case might be. In their own understanding, if or once you have a place where you can go and do all that, you are not jobless. But in truth, that&

The Goldmine called Solid Waste

Image
The Goldmine called Solid Waste Some weeks ago I listed some businesses that can be done as an enviroprenuer. One of such is Solid waste management. I am discussing this today because of the opportunity that has presented itself again to us as professionals. Let's begin by asking ourselves what waste is. This is one of the simplest and also hardest questions to be asked, why? Your definition of waste depends on time and space, and several other factors. But this is one of my best definition of waste: Waste is what is left after a material has served its original purpose. Like I mentioned earlier, the definition of waste depends on time and space. Solid waste therefore is that waste that is not free flowing, can either be combustible or noncombustible such as papers, polythene, wood, garbage, glass, clothes, construction wastes etc. We are not going into rhetorics today but a practical way of generating wealth as an EHO. One of the surest way of establishing yourself

Re- Challenges of Environmental Health in Nigeria

Re- Challenges of Environmental Health in Nigeria One of our readers gave this beautiful response to the article about the challenges of Environmental health in Nigeria. Please, do read and enjoy. Dear San. Femi Abolade, I read your article 'Challenges of Environmental Health in Nigeria' and amidst being bowled over at the realization that a fellow sanitarian actually wrote it, I was profoundly glad that the profession still had such rare elements like you Sir. I couldn't agree less with your highlights Sir - from 'We being the architects of our own misfortunes', to "The negative impacts of the 'Democracy of the day'". However, I beg to differ a bit as regards 'Lack of  Media Presence'. I do not know where you serve or base Sir, but in recent times, with credits to the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN), the Environmental Health Profession had witnessed substantial or should I say reasonable, save for

Challenges of Environmental Health in Nigeria

Image
Challenges of Environmental Health in Nigeria - Femi Abolade Even though the environmental health profession predates Nigeria's independence and is one of the oldest in the Nation, it has not been accorded the recognition it deserves over the years. The emergence of EHORECON by the Act 11, 2002 have done little to change the trend (although it could have been worse without it). Practitioners in many states have been battling with how to ensure the continued relevance of the profession in modern day realities as there are hawks waiting to prey on any available lacuna. In many states of the Federation, activities of the Environmental Health Officers are not seen, and where they try to force visibility, they aren't given the needed credit. Rate of unemployment in the profession is not only high but alarming. Although it would be unfair to feel that malaise affect only the cadre, but ours is quite obvious. It is also note worthy that the viability of the profession has mad
