A Nation of Filth

Image
A Nation of Filth Femi Abolade | July 24, 2017 Recent floodings in the Nation has revealed the dark side of our lifestyle. We are a Nation of filth and dirtiness, desecrating every available space, polluting every environmental media, without a sense of responsibility to the coming generation. Unsightly pictures of areas that were even thought of to be nice, sent vomit-inducing images to our brains, but I doubt if we have ever learnt our lessons. From Aba to Abuja, Ibadan to Jos, Sokoto to Mowe, looking through the window of your car, all you see is heaps and heaps of refuse littering the major roads in Nigeria. It gets worse as you leave the state capitals and head towards the hinterlands. We have become a people with no sense of shame, no iota of responsibility, and no respect for our immediate environment. In this part of the world, throwing thrash through the windows of our cars, or the public bus is no big deal. In fact, it is the norm. You see the so-called educated

AKURE THEMATIC LESSONS (3): Little Efforts Matter

Image
AKURE THEMATIC LESSONS (3): Little Efforts Matter Femi Abolade | May 4, 2017 A lot of lessons were learnt at the just concluded thematic MCEP in Akure. If you were there, I guess you should have learnt that too. Even though many participants were busy buying T-shirts, inner briefs, and other sorts, yet so many others sat down attentively listening to the lectures. That's not where this write-up is tuned to anyway. Attending the last Thematic MCEP taught me that little efforts matter, no matter what, where or when. Sometimes, what we do may not attract the greatest accolades we expect, or the greatest encomium we covet, or the continuous encouragement we think we deserve. But just like the man fetching water and pouring it into the big container, no effect is seen even though the effort is much. One day though, just a pouring will cause an overflowing. On Tuesday at the programme, there was a consultative forum with the Council Registrar, Dr Abonyi Dominic. Several quest

AKURE THEMATIC LESSONS (2): Remita Reminiscence

Image
AKURE THEMATIC LESSONS (2): Remita Reminiscence For many EHOs, the last Thematic MCEP held in Akure was synonymous with unnecessary stress, spurious anger, frustrating moments and great displeasure. This does not, in no way, robb it off its many positives. On Monday when the programme officially commenced, many officers could not register for the thematic. Many had come with the mindset that they would pay through the traditional means of bank account or POS, but that idea had been jettisoned a very long time ago. This, we must agree isn't entirely the fault of EHORECON, but laxity on our side as respectable officers. Letters and text messages sent to officers had stipulated the means of payment of all fees to the Council. It is no longer news that the Federal Government of Nigeria had adopted the Treasury Single Account (TSA) for all MDAs. And the only platform for such as at today is REMITA. Therefore, we can't claim to be ignorant about such wide spread informati

AKURE THEMATIC LESSONS(1): The Virtue Called Patience

Image
AKURE THEMATIC LESSONS(1): The Virtue Called Patience Femi Abolade | May 2, 2017 The Virtue Called Patience No, not the wife of our ex-president, Dame, but a very important virtue needed in life is patience. Being patient can be very rewarding even though it is not very easy. One of the most difficult thing to do in life is to wait. Waiting! Waiting sometimes can be frustrating and nerve wracking, but often it comes with a reward that brings smile to the face. Patience is not just a passive resignation of fate that what will happen will happen, and taking up a lazy attitude. Patience is a deliberate action to wait with faith after conscious effort have been put into play. This was one of the lessons I learnt at the just concluded Thematic MCEP training organized for EHOs in Akure, Ondo State. I am sure the lessons will stay with me for the rest of my life. I hope you also learn one thing or two so we may end up smiling in that endeavours of yours. On the second day of

EHOs GET FREE UNIFORMS IN AKURE

Image
EHOs GET FREE UNIFORMS IN AKURE The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria made good her words by distributing free uniforms to all EHOs with the current year practicing licence in the Southwest zone of Nigeria. This occurred and is still happening at the ongoing Thematic MCEP in Akure, Ondo State. Officers who produced evidences of their current year license and last promotion were issued with a full set of uniform and the accompanying accessories. In addition, Wolewole.com can authoritatively report that the Council Registrar, while answering questions during the interactive session after the first thematic, assured those who have their 2014/15 licences and have evidences of attending two thematic will be given their uniforms also. The Registrar, Dr. Abonyi Dominic, also used the period to respond to myriads of questions raised by practitioners. Akure thematic MCEP will be coming to an end on Thursday

Getting Into The Solid Waste Collection Business

Image
Getting Into The Solid Waste Collection Business Femi Abolade | April 19, 2017 | We are professionals and I wouldn't want to stand defining what solid waste is. But we know that it is that waste which is not free flowing. Examples include waste paper, polythene, wood, garbages, glass, rags and so on. One of the major problem we have in every nook and cranny of the Nation is the issue of waste collection and disposal. We may talk about Recycling, sometimes later, but for now, I will limit this seminar to solving the problem of waste disposal. Let me tell you that you are not the only person repulsed by the indiscriminate disposal of refuse everywhere. Members of the public are also not comfortable with this problem. They are waiting for somebody to solve that problem. They are actually WAITING FOR YOU TO ACT! What are you supposed to do? Help them collect it and disposed it of course! The next question that comes to our minds is how do I fund it. But I tell you

CLOSING ORDER! - A Short Story (2)

CLOSING ORDER! - A Short Story (2) By Femi Abolade Continued from last week In case you missed the part 1 of this interesting short story, you can read it here http://femiabolade.blogspot.com.ng/2017/04/closing-order-short-story.html O ya, let's go there..... ******************* On number 15 Tekobo street, stood an old one-story building. The building made from burnt red bricks but plastered with cement mortar to make it look modern but with wooden stairs and decking, has four rooms and a shop on the ground floor with three rooms and a spacious living room upstairs. From the frontage of the building it looked like a pigsty with dirts everywhere. Wole and his two assistants commenced inspection from the passage of the ground floor of the house. Taju, the junior health attendant covered his nose immediately they entered the house as junks of various sizes and categories filled the floor of the passage. He was quickly cautioned by Wole, who, even though had pe

He was stout, pot-bellied and as dark as the devil himself. The young man, dressed in the complete regalia of white jacket over brown trouser, two star epaulette, a shining kumquats with a laced brown pair of boots. His brown beret sat gracefully on his head with the National crest beautifully placed on it tilted to the left, he released a smirk. His name tag read Oluwole Adewole, Environmental Health Officer. Wole looked at the dirty man standing before him, they look world apart. One from a clean heaven while the other representing no ot

Migingo, The Most Densely Populated Island in the World

Image
Migingo, The Most Densely Populated Island in the World Femi Abolade | April 3, 2017 | 7.50am Migingo, a tiny rock island on Lake Victoria, in Kenya, measures just 0.49 acres, but is officially home to 131 residents – although some sources put the population at around 1,000 – making it the most densely populated island in the world. The so-called “Iron Clad Island” of Migingo (after the metal shack shanty town covering it almost entirely) has a very unclear history. According to some accounts, it was originally settled by two Kenyan fishermen, Dalmas Tembo and George Kibebe, who came here in 1991 and laid the foundation of today’s community. Others say that it was a Ugandan, Joseph Unsubuga, who came here first and then brought more of his fishing friends. It was this kind of contradicting stories, and the battle over the island’s fish-rich waters that created a long-standing conflict over the ownership of Migingo between Kenya and neighboring Uganda. Migingo is technically

Malaria Prevention and Control: Trying the Environmental Sanitation Approach

Image
Malaria Prevention and Control: Trying the Environmental Sanitation Approach It is no longer news that Malaria fever is endemic to Nigeria and the entire Sub-saharan Africa and unfortunately it has become a norm in our collective lexicon in this part of the world. Also, many a family already have a budget for the combat of the accepted disease (Malaria tax) that it is no longer shocking, the number of deaths attributed to it on a daily basis. In retrospect, looking at the efforts both the Federal and State governments put into the fight against the Ebola virus scourge that  ravaged parts of the West Africa including Nigeria, even though recorded deaths were low compared to thousands of children under five years and pregnant women dying daily via malaria, so many questions begin to pop up. Do we act so non-challantly because Malaria kills majorly the poor members of the public or what? It is really disturbing. Really, it's not because the government has not done anything b

Today is World Water Day!

Image
Today is World Water Day! Femi Abolade |  March 22, 2017  | 9.30am After air, the most important need of man is water. The popular singer and Afrobeat legend, Abami eda Fela Anikulapo Kuti sang the song water no get enemy. And the axiom is actually true. But unfortunately, there are several parts of the world with no access to potable water. We must therefore do everything in our power to protect our water sources. World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about taking action to tackle the water crisis. Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home, spending countless hours queuing or trekking to distant sources, and coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water. This year's theme: Why waste water? in support of SDG 6.3 on improving water quality and reducing, treating and reusing wastewater. As Environmental health practitioners, we should encourage the populace to conserve and preserve water. Prea

An Open Letter to the Council of Provosts of Colleges of Health

Image
An Open Letter to the Council of Provosts of Colleges of Health Sirs, WATCH YOUR BACKS: BACKLASH IS IMMINENT It is my hope that this letter to you our revered leaders at the various Schools and Colleges of Health Tec hnology across the country will not be misconstrued as an affront on your personalities but an effort to ensure that holistic health is preserved. As a graduate of one of the foremost school of Health Technology in Nigeria about 14 years ago, I have come to a conclusion that most of us are actually overrated. The Health sector in the Nation is in a sorry state, not only because of the policy makers whose myopic views keep hampering development but also because our training institutions which are supposed to produce policy implementors have done more harm than good. In the past years all we have are government health institutions where few health workers are trained but today, private health institutions are springing up daily like unwanted boils. Have these p

Ado-Odo/Ota local government: Sanitation officers act with impunity By Gbenga Akinfenwa   |   19 March 2017   |   1:23 am Council’s toilet too far from citizens Operates Private Cell The excesses of sanitation officers of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government in Ogun State now constitute embarrassment to residents and other road users in the area.In the last few weeks, there are reports of innocent citizens arrested and locked-up overnight at designated cell within the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Headquarters. Majority of those detained in this cell were arrested at odd hours of the night and for minor offences such as urinating in open space or around bus stops. The Guardian learnt that these security operatives come in plain clothes, accompanied by Naval personnel to harass and arrest their victims, who are workers and traders returning to their homes after the day’s work. It was also gathered that they hang around road junctions and bus stops, where there are no public toil

Are you still looking for a job?

Image
Are you still looking for a job? Well, you are not alone. So many people are also inthe same boat as you.But have you ever considered that you could actually be the cause why you havekept on searching with nothing meaningful in sight?Well, here, let's take a look. These are some of the reasons why your job searchhas proven to be abortive so far. 1. You don’t know what a job really is: As funny as this might sound, so many folks out there who deem themselves unemployed actually don’t know what a job is really all about. You might be one of them. Generally speaking, so many people thinka job is all about having an office and probably, a boss too.To them a job is simply a place where you dress up and go to every day of the week, spend some time there, perform certain tasks and get paid at the end of the week or month as the case might be. In their own understanding, if or once you have a place where you can go and do all that, you are not jobless. But in truth, that&

The Goldmine called Solid Waste

Image
The Goldmine called Solid Waste Some weeks ago I listed some businesses that can be done as an enviroprenuer. One of such is Solid waste management. I am discussing this today because of the opportunity that has presented itself again to us as professionals. Let's begin by asking ourselves what waste is. This is one of the simplest and also hardest questions to be asked, why? Your definition of waste depends on time and space, and several other factors. But this is one of my best definition of waste: Waste is what is left after a material has served its original purpose. Like I mentioned earlier, the definition of waste depends on time and space. Solid waste therefore is that waste that is not free flowing, can either be combustible or noncombustible such as papers, polythene, wood, garbage, glass, clothes, construction wastes etc. We are not going into rhetorics today but a practical way of generating wealth as an EHO. One of the surest way of establishing yourself
