Expired, Dented and Spoilt Tomato Paste Confiscated in Isara

Environmental Health Officers in Isara, the headquarters of Remo North Local government last Thursday February 16th, intercepted and confiscated expired and already spoilt canned tomato paste numbering over 500 pieces. The said goods were brought into the Isara market for sale at ridiculously low prices which alerted the officers.

The canned products also had signs of burns which signaled that they might have been recovered from sites of destruction. The tins have also been dented at various degrees making its consumption very prejudicial to health.

Sanitarian Paul Amosun who led the inspection team revealed that the perpetrators came with the mindset of selling the expired and spoilt items to the unsuspecting members of the public. The general public is therefore being warned to always watch out for production and expired dates of canned goods before buying and consumption.

The perpetrators have since then been arrested and will be duly arraigned in court while the expired goods are destroyed. Eating of such food and food products leads to food poisoning, food borne diseases, and in some cases lead to death.

In the same vein, some sellers of already spoilt preserved meat, otherwise known as tinko were arrested by Market officials in Osiele, a suburb of Abeokuta in Odeda local government before the EHOs were alerted. They have since Wednesday 14th February, 2017 being handed over to the Nigerian Police.

Members of the public should always be alert about what to buy and eat. Also, when with complaints, the public should contact the nearest Environmental Health Office in the Local Government for prompt response and action.

Remember that prevention is better and cheaper than cure so clean your environment and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
