SEIZURE AND DESTRUCTION OF CONDEMNED FROZEN FOODS AND CANNED FOODS

Environmental Health Officers in Ogun State continued a clampdown on the sales of some spoilt, expired and already unwholesome foods and food products within the week. Last week it was reported by Wolewole.com that health officers in Isara confiscated expired tomato paste while the perpetrators were apprehended.

Sequel to this action, searchlight was beamed on other parts of the state, and this yielded positively.

Health Officers in Owode-egba, headquarters of Obafemi/Owode Local government impounded and destroyed expired and spoilt canned tomato paste numbering about 500 pieces which were brought to be sold in Siun market. These were buried in the presence of the sellers.

In Ijebu imushin, a town in Ijebu East local government, poultry meat which were already unfit for human consumption and put up for sale were confiscated and destroyed immediately. Also, expired wine products and seasonings were destroyed.

Environmental Health Officers in Odeda Local government were alerted by the public on the sale of expired Caprisone drinks. They immediately swung into action and the seller was arrested and the products taken for destruction.

Investigation carried out by the Environmental Health Officers association well as members of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps revealed that the drinks were brought in from Lagos while the canned tomato paste were brought from refuse dump site in Sagamu.

Members of the public are therefore warned to watch carefully what they eat as many of these expired and spoilt products are in circulation. Also the public should always contact the nearest environmental health office in the local government whenever such is seen.

Remember that prevention is better and cheaper than cure.
